The amount of labor required for a piece or the fact that it has (been in) family property are just two of the many reasons why we let furniture projects slip through our fingers. Permit me to convince you to keep pieces of furniture about which you have conflicting feelings:
I got this modest antique kitchen island at a local estate sale where the owner just died away. It was one of those purchasing moments when I felt thrilled and sad at the same time. I had mixed emotions about it.
While I was out walking with my kid, I saw her on a regular basis over the past two years. She was one of those women who, simply by glancing at the exterior of her house, it was obvious that she had a lot of interesting things.
The decision of whether or not to save the furniture was no longer relevant after the sight of the family and their stunning antique kitchen island. It was a question of how I might produce something more lovely out of something that was already cherished.
In the case of items that have been handed down to us, we should absolutely behave in this manner. I have certain items that were passed down to me by my grandma throughout the years. I have no doubt that Mom would have wanted me to appreciate those things, even if doing so required me to give them a bit of a makeover.

First, I gave it a good scrubbing… but it still smelled bad. After that, I sprinkled cinnamon and baking soda all over it. I let it a few days to marinate in its own juices. Better, but not completely gone.
In the end, I gave it a thorough cleaning using the baking soda and cinnamon residue, along with some Pine-Sol. That was the correct response!
